Volunteer of the Month for June

Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers is pleased to announce our Volunteer of the Month for June 2018 is Jessica. When Jessica is volunteering at the Scottsdale office, you can find her bringing smiles to patients’ faces with a fresh cup of coffee and a warm blanket.   Although Jessica may be young and new to Ironwood, she’s already amassed a lifetime of experience volunteering.

Philanthropy Runs in the Genes

From an early age, Jessica’s mother instilled in her the importance of helping others.  Jessica recalls, “When I was about ten, I’d help my mom make quilts and goody bags for the fire department.  They were given out to children that had been rescued from fires.  I think that experience planted the seed for me to be involved with something philanthropic for the rest of my life.  Looking back now that’s probably what my mother had in mind!”  Not serendipitously, Jessica’s mom Linda is also a volunteer at the Ironwood Mesa (Arbor) office!

Jessica has organized blood drives and philanthropic committees within several corporations.  She’s volunteered with organizations around the country, such as  Junior Achievement, Friends of the Elderly, Buddy Up, Special Olympics, Foundation for Blind Children, and Meals on Wheels.  “With each opportunity I’ve had to serve,” Jessica says, “I know I’ve been able to make a difference for that person.  I can feel their energy improve and that feeds my soul to do more.  My volunteering isn’t entirely altruistic because I get so much out of giving.  At Ironwood, the staff is very welcoming. My 98 year old great uncle Ivan is an Ironwood patient so I know this place treats people right!  As a volunteer, everyone makes you feel that you’re a valuable part of the team.  It’s a great place to volunteer.   I know others would love to volunteer at Ironwood if they only tried it.”

The dictionary describes philanthropy as “goodwill to fellow members of the human race; active effort to promote human welfare,” but some say that Jessica is “hyper-philanthropic” which is plainly evident.  We are grateful to have her helping our Scottsdale office patients and congratulate her on being our Volunteer of the Month!
