February 2020 Volunteer of the Month

February 2020 Volunteer of the Month is Carolyn. Before moving to Arizona, Carolyn worked as a purchasing director for the cable TV industry for 45 years in Oregon and Washington. After her husband Tom passed away from cancer, she moved to Texas to live with her daughter and granddaughters. Once there, Carolyn wanted to provide comfort, support, and a smile to cancer patients. She volunteered at a cancer treatment center in Texas before moving to Nevada and then Arizona.

When she got settled into her new life in Arizona, she stumbled across Ironwood’s volunteer program. She took to her work effortlessly and with vigor. Staff at the Scottsdale location say that patients and staff are continually commenting on how amazing “the lady with the purple hair is.” Ironwood social worker Nicole McCallister says, “Carolyn has the best spirit and motivation for being a volunteer. She is here for the patients and a huge support to our nurses. Carolyn has gone above and beyond in her role. Scottsdale is so lucky to have her!”

Carolyn lives with her three daughters and spends time with her granddaughters in Phoenix and Texas. She also volunteers at the Cardinal Stadium.

Volunteers are an integral part of our Ironwood Cancer & Research Centers Integrative Services. We use volunteers to assist with patients in the treatment room and our wig boutique. Carolyn, our February Volunteer of the Month, is an exemplary example of kindness and dedication. Way to go, Carolyn!
